Profile


The foundation of the Political Science department at B.P. Chaliha dates back to June 24, 1972, along with the founding of the college, with the goal of bringing higher education to the doorsteps of the underprivileged and impoverished citizens of greater Nagarbera. Otherwise, the college’s Political Science department is regarded as one of its oldest. It began in modest fashion in 1972 with a class of 135 PU level students and one teacher. Sultan Ahmed, M.A., succeeded S. Gauridhar Kalita, M.A., as the department’s first head. Professors Dayananda Kr. Das, M.A., Nuran Nahar Begum, Abdul Hakim and Noor Alam. Professor Noor Alam retired on September 30, 2022. The college’s in charge-principal, Professor Dayananda Kr. Das, retired after serving as vice-principal for an additional year. On April 8, 2013, Dr. Anjan Jyoti Borah joined the department as an Assistant Professor. But he passed away from an accident on July 12, 2022, leaving us.
Currently, the department is managed by three faculty members. One position is unfilled.

Up to 1978, the Political Science department offered general course to students at both the PU and B.A. levels. The institutions began offering an Honours course in political science in 1979, and that same year the college was placed under a deficit Grant-in-aid scheme. The Assam Government provincialized the college after 2005.
Over the course of fifty years, the department generated a sizable number of outstanding graduates. Some former students from this department have achieved distinction in public life, including Mr. Gopi Nath Das, a former state minister of Assam. Former students of this department Mr. Dildar Rezza and Mr. Sukur Ali Ahmed served as state ministers for Assam. Many former students of this department are currently working as lecturers at various state-run colleges. This department has produced a sizable numbers of teachers who are currently employed in Assam’s LP, ME, High School and Higher Secondary Schools. Several are working as Lawyers and many have had government positions.
The department has built a solid reputation by participating in the majority of activities held both inside and outside of the college. The department occasionally hosts events including quizzes, news readings, education tours, field studies, national seminars, departmental seminars, popular talks, debates and symposiums. The department publishes an annual periodical named “Focus” through an organisation called the “ Political Science study Forum”.
A distinctive quality of this department is good results. Following the college’s finest graduate, Diganta Kalita, who won the award in 2008, Gautam Biswas and Fatema Begum have won the award repeatedly. Insan Ali, a student of ours, earned a second-place grade in political science at Gauhati University in 2021. Gargi Medhi took first place in the 2019 Gauhati University inter-college and university essay writing competition. The department’s students excel in a variety of collegiate competitions, bringing honour to the college.
Courses Offered: The Department Offers courses in general for the PU/ Higher secondary level. For BA/ TDC level students, the Department offers the honours/Major Course and Regular/ minor course in Political Science. The department started an add on course on Human Rights Education in the year 2015-16 and another add on course (Certificate course) on Indian Constitution was started in 2023. The admission of the students in major courses is done on the basis of merit.
