B. P. Chaliha College is one of the premier institutions of South Kamrup of Assam was established in 1972. The degree course (Under Graduate Level) was started in 1976, introducing Economics as one of the subjects in the college under the headship of Nirode Baran Das. In 1979, honours courses were introduced in the department under Gauhati University. At present, the Department is functioning as one of the paramount departments of the College, facilitating with general and honours courses in under graduate level along with a good number of students in higher secondary level. Presently, the department has a sound faculty strength of 5 teachers (Three Associate Professor and Two Assistant Professor) specialized in varied areas of economics. In addition to teaching, the department organises i. Departmental Seminars ii. Group Discussions iii. Industrial Exposure Programme iv. Seminar/Workshop at Regional and National level v. Invited lectures by prominent academicians and development practitioners, vi. Field survey, Excursion to enhance learning culture in students. Along with teaching, the department also provides a healthy and enabling environment to students to fabricate and enhance quality in them. The faculty members have published sizable numbers of valuable research articles in international and national journals and have undertaken Minor Research Projects supported and funded by UGC and ICSSR. The vision of the department is to emerge as a leading centre of teaching and developing a balanced set of capabilities in students to make themselves economically productive as well as to enhance individual well-being.
